about
A haunting tale about the passing of a childhood friend.
lyrics
Michael Perry died in a freak accident last week
He drove his car through the front of a 7-11
No one else was injured but he took out the Slurpee machine
And a large display of Lays potato chips
My mother called to give me the news
I hadn’t heard his name in forty years
Michael Perry was a kid from the neighborhood
We hung out together when we were young
His mother was from Portugal which I found exotic
His father was my hard-nosed Little League coach; he made me wear a cup in every game
Frankly, Michael Perry scared me a little bit
Even at that early age, he struck me as sincerely hellbent
My brother and I used to go to his house to play the board game Masterpiece
When we weren’t looking, Michael Perry would hide the dice
And when we asked where they were
He would spit them out of his mouth
I remember Michael Perry showing us a Dennis the Menace coloring book
On every character he had drawn a penis
Even Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. Wilson
And this made him laugh uncontrollably
Michael Perry taught me about the birds and the bees
He shouted to me from across the street
“You came out of your mother’s c!”
I can remember it to this day
I drove to Florida for the funeral, I’m not even sure why
I signed the guest book and grabbed a prayer card
Someone had drawn a penis on it
That’s when I knew the spirit of Michael Perry was still alive
In a drawing of a penis on our Lord and Redeemer, Jesus Christ
